What are Key Competencies?
The Skills Passport is a set of questions based on a set of key competencies. Key competencies are set of general skills, understanding and abilities that underpin performance in all types of work and in life.
You will be able to use the Skills Passport Certificate to show employers and educational organisations that you have relevant skills and knowledge.
Key Competency 1. Collecting, analyzing and organizing information
The capacity to locate information, sift and sort information in order to select what is required and present it in a useful way and evaluate both the information itself and the sources and methods used to obtain it.
Key Competency 2: Communicating ideas and information
The capacity to communicate effectively with others using the range of spoken, written, graphic and other non-verbal means of expression.
Key Competency 3: Planning and Organising Activities
The capacity to plan and organise one's own work activities, including making good use of time and resources, sorting out priorities and monitoring one's own performance.
Key Competency 4: Working with Others and in Teams
The capacity to interact effectively with other people both on a one-to-one basis and in groups, including understanding and responding to the needs of a client and working effectively as a member of a team to achieve a shared goal.
Key Competency 5: Using Mathematical Ideas and Techniques
The capacity to use mathematical ideas, such as number and space, and techniques, such as estimation and approximation, for practical purposes.
Key Competency 6: Solving Problems
The capacity to apply problem-solving strategies in purposeful ways, both in situations where the problem and the desired solution are clearly evident and in situations requiring critical thinking and a creative approach to achieve an outcome.
Key Competency 7: Using Technology
The capacity to apply technology, combining the physical and sensory skills needed to operate equipment with the understanding of scientific and technological principles needed to explore and adapt systems.
Key Competency 8: Using Cultural Understanding
The capacity to apply an understanding of the nature and diversity of ideas, values, knowledge, traditions and practices in a range of work and life situations.
What is the Skills Passport Process?
The Skills Passport process identifies your achievement of the Key Competencies and gives you recognition for work and life skills as well as providing you with feedback on your further training needs.
The procedure is:
- you complete the Skills Passport questions - this can be done in tandem with a mentor, or by yourself to start off
- your mentor conducts a structured discussion with you to confirm the skills you've identified and selected in your answers
- your mentor provides you with confidential, practical and open feedback
- your mentor should provide direction to you regarding employment or further training to enhance your employment prospects
- your mentor arranges for you to receive the Skills Passport Certificate
