What is the Mentor's Role?
If you have been asked to be a Skills Passport Mentor by a person doing a Skills Passport questionnaire your role will be to confirm the answers they provide pertaining to the skills and abilities they've identified in themselves.
You might do this by obtaining contact details for people who can verify what they've done or by citing actual examples - such as a diary, plans for a budget, or by asking them to explain the task or experience.
There are three sets of questionnaires as follows:
Skills Passport for Young People
Skills Passport for Women
Skills Passport for Men
How to Conduct the Discussion/Interview with your Skills Passport candidate
- Login with the code they have given you and become familiar with the Skills Passport questionnaire and your candidate's answers
- Conduct the interview in an area that is convenient for you and the candidate
- Explain the process for the issue of the Skills Passport Certificate (See Help)
- Give them a copy of their answers to the Skills Passport questions
- Discuss their answers and how they can be validated.
It's important to:
- praise the candidate when they have been able to answer most of the questions and provide evidence relating to a Key Competency
- discuss frankly and use specific examples where the candidate's answers to a Key Competency seem to be lacking
- keep a record of the evidence accepted to support the candidate's answers to the questions - this can be added to the Skills Passport form
- make a judgement on which Key Competencies can be demonstrated and/or where training may assist in enhancing their skills
- provide feedback to the candidate regarding your decision
- document any recommendations for further education, training or work experience
Issuing the Certificate
When you're satisfied with the candidate's answers and have been able to verify their skills through the above methods, login again to the Skills Passport system to issue the Skills Passport Certificate indicating the Key Competencies that have been achieved.
